"Το μυστήριο της Κρήτης είναι βαθύ - όποιος πατήσει στο νησί τούτο νοιώθει μυστηριώδη δύναμη, ζεστή, αγαθή, να διακλαδίζεται στις φλέβες του και τη ψυχή του να μεγαλώνει"

ΝΙΚΟΣ ΚΑΖΑΝΤΖΑΚΗΣ

"Crete 's mystery is extremely deep. Whoever sets foot on this island senses a mysterious force branching warmly and beneficiently through his veins, senses his soul begins to grow"

NIKOS KAZANTZAKIS

Humans have been continuously present on the island since arriving 8,000 years ago during the Neolithic. Yet despite this long history of human habitation, the Cretan environment remains unique in its diversity.

THE BIODIVERSITY OF CRETE

The size of Crete - 8,336 square km (3,219 square miles) and the diversity of its habitats support a wide variety of unique fauna and flora. Wetlands, ponds, hills and the sub alpine areas, gorges rich with lush vegetation, beaches and lowland areas, isolated plateaux and semi-mountainous habitats, numerous mountain ranges are home to unique species such as the Cretan Wildcat and the Wild Goat, also known as Kri Kri. The sealife is abundant around Crete's coast featuring many species among them the Sea Turtle (Caretta Caretta).

It is in the spirit of true Crete and of the Cretans to respect nature, wildlife and birdlife and many organisations play their part in protecting endangered species and ensuring that no more species are put at risk.

DAMAGE TO THE ENVIRONMENT

Negative impacts from tourism occur when the level of visitor use is greater than the environment's ability to cope with this use within the acceptable limits of change. Uncontrolled conventional tourism poses potential threats to many natural areas around Crete. It can put enormous pressure on the island and lead to impacts such as increased pollution, discharges into the sea, natural habitat loss, increased pressure on endangered species, soil erosion and heightened vulnerability to forest fires. It often puts a strain on water resources, and it can force local populations to compete for the use of critical resources.

OUR INITIATIVES

We take environmental considerations very seriously. Our eco policy compliments our commitment to being as environmentally friendly as possible which in turn can contribute to the delicate eco balance on Crete. Your support will help maintain more prosperous, more productive environment, for you and for everyone.

We have implemented a number of initiatives to make our service greener and more sustainable without compromising on performance or price. Our eco policy comprises the proper management and monitoring of waste, the reduction of pollution and emissions, the use of alternative solar energy and the compliance with environmental legislation and environmental codes of practice.
